Hampton Secrets

Are you children being harmed by your separation?

Children rarely process the pain of a split out loud. They don’t have the language to express themselves the way adults can. Instead, their distress hides behind quiet warning signs:
đź’” Being “extra good”: Blaming themselves and trying to act perfect to bring you back together.
đź’” Becoming more quiet. Retreating into themselves and holding back thoughts or feelings out of fear that speaking up might spark anger, tension, or further conflict
đź’” Acting out: Unexpressed pain surfacing as sudden anger or behavioral struggles.
💔 Taking sides: Choosing one parent just to make their own life easier and survive the tension—despite loving both parents deeply.
đź’” Family influence: Extended family often rewrite past relationships to protect their own, speaking in a negative way about the other parent to the child, to coerce the child to take their a side. This hurts their sense of self.

It’s incredibly important to talk to your child about your separation to ensure they can cope the best way possible. Do this with the other parent if possible. Timing is important. Gentle conversations without blame will help them.
Knowing what to say when your child is hurting can feel overwhelming. To help them process the split safely, focus on these core communication steps:
Keep it age-appropriate: Avoid oversharing adult details, legal battles, or financial stress. Give them simple, reassuring facts.
Remove the blame: Never speak ill of the other parent. Children view themselves as 50% of each parent—criticising your ex hurts your child’s self-worth.
Validate their emotions: When they act out or cry, let them know it is okay to feel angry, sad, or confused.
Reassure them constantly: Remind them repeatedly that the separation is between the adults, it is never their fault, and that both parents will always love them.
