Description

The Number One essential Child-Focused Separation guide that changes everything — especially for your child.

Separation is not a single moment. It is a process that unfolds over time, often unevenly, and it affects children in ways that are not always immediately visible. While adults are often focused on decisions, logistics, and the practical realities of separation, children are making sense of changes in safety, predictability, and emotional connection.

For many parents, this period is emotionally overwhelming. You may be carrying grief, anger, fear, exhaustion, or uncertainty — sometimes all at once. This book Child-Focused Separation was written with that reality in mind. It does not assume clarity, emotional capacity, or perfect decision-making. It is intended to support parents who are doing their best while navigating a deeply challenging time.

Child-Focused Separation book cover

Over decades, I have worked with separating parents, supporting them to navigate conflict, grief, and significant change while keeping their children’s emotional experience at the centre. I hold a Master’s Degree in Dispute Resolution, and my work has consistently focused on helping parents remain child-focused, even when circumstances feel overwhelming or uncertain.

Child-Focused Separation is for separated and separating parents who want to keep their child’s emotional experience at the forefront — a commitment I see every day in parents who are trying to do better, even when circumstances are complex or strained.

The approach throughout is grounded in a cooperative parenting framework and is intended for parents who are willing to improve their co-parenting relationship, move away from adversarial patterns and toward shared responsibility for their children’s wellbeing.

Child-Focused Separation does not adopt a court-driven lens. Instead, it supports parents who are prepared to reflect, remain child-focused, and work toward a functional parenting partnership beyond the end of their intimate relationship. The guidance that follows assumes a commitment to accountability, respect, and forward-looking decision-making, as these are the conditions under which children experience the greatest sense of emotional safety following separation.

Child-Focused Separation follows a deliberate progression. The early chapters focus on understanding your child’s inner world — how children experience separation, conflict, silence, loyalty pressures, and emotional uncertainty. This understanding forms the foundation for everything that follows.

Later chapters build on this foundation by exploring communication, boundaries, parenting arrangements, extended family dynamics, and, where necessary, formal processes and protection.

Most chapters end with a Reflection and a What if I feel like I’m the only one trying? section. These repeated sections are intentional and are included to support parents who may feel alone in making child-focused changes.

Although Child-Focused Separation is designed to be read from beginning to end, many parents find it helpful to return to particular chapters as their situation or perspective changes. Some chapters may resonate more strongly at different points in the separation journey. Re-reading with new understanding is often part of the process.

Child-Focused Separation is not a book to rush through. It is meant to be read gradually, revisited when needed, and used as a guide rather than a rulebook. There is no expectation of perfection. Small, thoughtful changes over time can make a meaningful difference to a child’s sense of safety and stability.

Above all, Child-Focused Separation is grounded in a simple principle: children should not have to manage the emotional consequences of adult decisions. When parents are supported to reflect, slow down, and act with awareness, children are freed to remain children — even in the midst of separation

You want to protect your children from conflict, reduce everyday tension, and find a way forward that genuinely works across two homes. But knowing how to achieve that in the midst of strong emotions and difficult conversations can feel overwhelming.

Written by Naomi Holtring MDR, a mediator with over 20 years’ experience supporting separating families, Child-Focused Separation offers a clear, grounded path from conflict to cooperation. It provides practical frameworks to help you remain child-focused, establish healthy boundaries, and make decisions with clarity and confidence.
