Keep it age-appropriate: Avoid oversharing adult details, legal battles, or financial stress. Give them simple, reassuring facts.
Validate their emotions: When they act out or cry, let them know it is okay to feel angry, sad, or confused.
Reassure them constantly: Remind them repeatedly that the separation is between the adults, it is never their fault, and that both parents will always love them.
Separation is a long journey, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. With over 20 years as a family mediator, I created Child-Focused Separation: From Conflict to Cooperation to travel alongside you through every stage of your split—providing practical support, script ideas for tough conversations, and a path forward grounded in love.
