Hampton Secrets

Regretful Mediator

As a young mum going through a painful separation, I made devastating mistakes in how I spoke to my young impressionable sons about their father.

Although I didn’t say it to them directly, I was so angry and upset with my husband that I wished him dead—and truly believed my sons didn’t need him. How terribly wrong I was.

After the anger finally wore off, my ex and I managed a good level of communication and co-parenting, but the damage to my boys was already done. More than 30 years later, they still struggle with an inability to trust women. They are both separated fathers and struggle with mental health issues. They both deeply resent me. I’ve tried so hard to repair it, but those words, spoken decades ago, can’t be taken back. It’s simply too late.

That painful regret is why I became a family mediator 20 years ago. I wanted to help parents make better decisions than I did. Having sat across from thousands of families navigating the exact same heartbreak, I wrote my book, Child-Focused Separation, From Conflict to Cooperation.

This guide is built from living it on both sides—as a broken-hearted young parent and as a wiser experienced mediator. It’s an honest, non-judgmental roadmap to help you understand what your children are experiencing while you navigate your own grief, anger, and the daunting practicalities of a split.

You don’t have to walk this painful road alone, and you don’t have to make the same irreversible mistakes I did.
